Authorization Specialist

 JOB DESCRIPTION: 

 This position reports directly to the Front Office Manager. As an Authorization Specialist, you will manage  authorizations and referrals to facilitate patient care. Your responsibilities include reviewing patient  medical histories, verifying information from referring physicians and confirming insurance coverage to  identify potential barriers to care. You will also monitor our schedule for add-on patients, ensuring prior authorizations are obtained before  appointments or procedures. Strong communication and coordination with healthcare providers and  insurance companies will be essential. While an associate degree in medical coding or a related field is  preferred, experience in medical billing or insurance authorization is also valued. We welcome detail oriented applicants with strong organizational skills committed to upholding high standards of patient  care. 

 

AUTHORIZATION SPECIALIST RESPONSIBILITIES:

 • Complete authorizations and referrals for services, including appointments and procedures.

 • Review the patient's medical history and insurance coverage for approval.

 • Contact and travel to referring physicians for additional information as needed. 

• Input new patient information and update information in our system.

 • Monitor schedule for potential issues.

 • Complete billing documentation. 

• Assist with other clerical tasks as needed. 

 

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of traits, processes, and  ethics in patient and customer care. 

• Demonstrated skills in writing and accessing notes, evaluations, and reports. 

• Ability to analyze complex information and software to develop spreadsheets and databases and do  word processing.

 • Ability to handle medical records discreetly.

 • Ability to meet established deadlines.

 • Knowledge of medical issues and terminology. 

 • Standard office equipment, including personal computers and peripherals; multi-line phone system.

 • Works well independently and has strong operational skills.

 • Learns quickly and has strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. 

 • Develops strong relationships with coworkers and has strong leadership skills. 

 

 EDUCATION:

 • High School diploma or GED certificate. 

• Associate degree preferred. 

 

EXPERIENCE:

 • Experience in medical billing or insurance authorization. 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 

Office environment, exposure to computer screens, frequent contact with the public. Continuous sitting.  Some lifting and carrying. Assist in philanthropic efforts for the clinic and perform other duties as  assigned. A valid Driver’s License and proof of insurance are required.
