Brownsville Raid Exhibit

The Brownsville Raid was an historic event of racial injustice against the 167 Buffalo Soldiers of the 25th Infantry, on August 13, 1906. The 167 Buffalo Soldiers of the 25th Infantry stationed at the Fort Brown were accused of the murder of a white bartender and a lengthy trial ensued. The matter reached President Theodore Roosevelt, who ultimately dishonorably discharged the Buffalo Soldiers, even though proof of culpability had not been found. The Buffalo Soldiers were eventually pardoned and honorably discharged in 1972 by President Nixon. This exhibit will include maps, never before seen images of Army/civilian correspondence, military pardon addendum and more. Through the help of Congressman Vela’s office and special research access to the National Archives, we present this unique exhibit.
