Symphony in the Park

Brownsville Literacy Center announces its 12th Annual ''Symphony in the Park and All That Jazz'' 2010 concert. As in the past, this year's event will be held on the Student Union Lawn of the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College, at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. This year we will also pay tribute to our past board member, the late Barry T. Horn, who selflessly brought joy to the Brownsville community through his passion for art and music. The concert features the UTB/TSC Rio Bravo Wind Symphony, under the direction of Allen Clark, and the One O'Clock Jazz Band, under the direction of Terry Tomlin and David Isadore. The concert grounds will be arranged with a priority for family lawn seating at $5 per ticket (children 4-12 yrs.) and $7 per ticket (13 yrs. up). The gate opens at 5:00, and families are encouraged to arrive early and bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics to enjoy before and during the performance. Snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase on the grounds during the event. General admission, $10 per ticket, will provide guests with a lawn chair. Senior citizens receive a $2.00 discount for all ticket levels, UTB/TSC students may purchase half price tickets with a current Sting Card, and children 3 and under are free. The ''Be a Hero for Literacy 2010'' Gala will take place on the Student Union veranda during the concert performance. The gala honors the supporters of Brownsville Literacy Center's ''Be a Hero for Literacy'' Annual Fund Campaign. Gala guests will enjoy a gourmet dinner and silent auction. Gala tickets are available for $100 per person. Groups of 10 may reserve a table for $1,000. Brownsville Literacy Center offers English-as-a-Second Language courses, a Family Literacy Program and a Mobile Learning Lab. To purchase tickets, or to make a contribution or sponsor our ''Be a Hero Campaign,'' call 956-542-8080 or e-mail brownsvilleliteracy@yahoo.com or visit www.brownsvilleliteracycenter
