Memorial Illumination Resaca de la Palma Battlefield
Join Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park as it honors the service and sacrifice of the U.S. and Mexican soldier who served in battles on the Rio Grande in the spring of 1846. The park will light 8,000 luminarias on the Resaca de la Palma Battlefield--one for each U.S. or Mexican soldier who participated in the opening campaign of the U.S.-Mexican War. The event will commence at 3 pm with living history programs and interpretation. A brief Memorial ceremony will occur at 5:30 pm, followed by the lighting of candles at sunset. Candles will remain lit until 8 pm. Visitors are encouraged to come out and experience the event. Those 12 and older are encouraged to bring a grill lighter and participate in the lighting of he candles. The event is free of charge and all activities are dependent on favorable weather conditions.
