About Us
Named for Texas’ greatest hero, Sam Houston State University honors its historical roots through academic excellence. For more than 140 years, SHSU has prepared students for meaningful lives of achievement. Its motto, “The measure of a Life is its Service,” resonates among its more than 21,000 students, eight colleges, and well beyond its Huntsville roots. Since opening its doors in 1976, the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center continues to fulfill its mission as a center for lifelong learning for students and practitioners in law enforcement, corrections, victim services, forensic science, and homeland security. The Center serves as a model of how academics, corrections, and law enforcement can work together for the betterment of criminal justice systems around the globe. Students at the College learn from world-renowned faculty recognized as specialists in their respective fields, earning awards and accolades for their contributions and service. Each faculty member brings a wealth of knowledge to the college as a successful practitioner in the field, a prominent researcher in their discipline, or an experienced participant in criminal justice systems abroad. Together, faculty provide a well-rounded experience for graduates, bringing research into practice to enhance their careers. The college enjoys an outstanding reputation in the field, regularly placed among the top programs by U.S. News & World Report and other respected independent organizations ranking undergraduate and graduate programs, and continues to earn high marks for research and scholarly work.
