The City of Brownsville, Gladys Porter Zoo, and the Brownsville Independent School District Unite for a Transformative Partnership

In a groundbreaking move, the City of Brownsville, the Gladys Porter Zoo, and the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD) are moving forward together as ONE CITY with a dynamic project that will see the expansion of the Gladys Porter Zoo and the relocation of BISD's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program that could facilitate its expansion.

The City has purchased the former Cummings Middle School from the school district in a sale worth an estimated $16 million. The former school campus will be used to expand the Zoo nearly doubling its size. The enhanced Zoo property will include a new entrance complex and a multi-level parking garage and new animal exhibits. Another feature of the project is the possible buildout of a hotel/restaurant area near the Zoo on a separate property to compliment the Brownsville tourist area.

Meanwhile, the school district will move its Career & Technical Education campus from the former middle school to a new site.

This collaboration effort between the three entities marks a significant step towards meeting the evolving needs of Brownsville's youth and the entire community, ensuring a bright and prosperous future for all.

The event will take place on Friday, October 18, 2024, starting at 8:00 AM, at the City of Brownsville Communications & Marketing Complex, located at 1312 East Adams St. in downtown Brownsville.

Friday with the City is an initiative of the Brownsville Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the City of Brownsville, designed to keep the community informed about the city's ongoing growth, progress, and vision for the future.
